Lessons from the Summer

And before we know it, the end of the summer is here. While I will keep supporting the founder in the near future, I decided to take the time to reflect on the many things I learned over our time working together. Some of the learnings are take are interpersonal, others are strategic but most are around the challenges of a founder’s journey.

  • · Choosing your founding team is the biggest most important decision. When it comes to choosing who to partner with during your early days, you need to look at it with very critical eyes. It’s important to consider the worst possible outcomes and protect yourself from them by a) being extremely selective and b) putting in place the conditions and protection mechanisms that seem appropriate to mitigate the risk

  • · There will always be a shiny new object. In a startup that can be a big but unattainable sale, a messy customer, a new product, etc. Not all new shiny objects are bad but it’s important to sit down and think of your broader strategy and long term vision before diving deep into it

  • · Social entrepreneurs will have a hard time sticking to their desire of creating a sustainable business that has a positive impact vs only prioritizing the social good and moving into a path that many NGOs follow. There is nothing wrong with pivoting, but it is something to keep in mind

  • · Falling in love with your mission will be your main hope and driver. This summer made me realize the power of a passionate founder- in Asan’s case, Ira is willing to do whatever it takes to deliver on her mission
